Spurs vs Mavericks Picks and Prediction – 10/24/2024

In the first game of a Thursday night NBA on TNT doubleheader, the San Antonio Spurs will battle the Dallas Mavericks from the American Airlines Center. For other NBA action see our NBA Predictions. The Spurs (22-60) finished with the second worst record in the Western Conference a season ago and are looking to snap a five-year playoff drought. That could end as soon as this season thanks in large part to the development of former number one overall draft pick Victor Wembanyama (3.6 bpg).

San Antonio signed veteran PG Chris Paul to maximize Wembanyama’s immense potential. The Spurs also added F Harrison Barnes to provide additional veteran leadership. SG Devin Vassell (19.5) and SF Keldon Johnson (15.7 ppg) are solid pieces to complement Wembanyama in the years to come. 

The Dallas Mavericks are fresh off a surprising NBA Finals appearance and are in search of their first title since 2011. The Mavericks earned half of their 50 regular season victories at home and ranked seventh in the league in offensive efficiency. The key to Dallas’ title run was a 16-4 stretch to close the regular season that saw the defense play at an elite level. 

All-Stars Luka Doncic (33.9 ppg) and Kyrie Irving (25.6 ppg) have proven that they can shoulder the offensive load. The Mavericks signed sharp-shooter Klay Thompson to space the floor and provide solid perimeter defense. Dallas C Dereck Lively II flourished as a rim runner in his rookie season. 

Dallas G Dante Exum is recovering from wrist surgery and will likely be out until sometime in January. The Spurs have the best defensive player in the world and the Mavericks were the second ranked defensive team over the final quarter of last season. Take the under.
