On Sunday, the Washington Mystics visit the Connecticut Sun to play Game 3 of their best of five WNBA Finals series. The series is knotted 1-1 after Connecticut beat Washington 99-87 in Game 2. The Mystics may have to play without top scorer Elena Delle Donne who has a herniated disk in her back. The teams said it is preparing as if Delle Donne would not play, but has not ruled her out.
Jonquel Jones led Connecticut offensively in Game 2 with 32 points, but it’s the suffocating defense of the Sun that has taken it up another notch during the Finals. Courtney Williams has allowed the fewest points per possession of any WNBA player during the playoffs. Alyssa Thomas can guard anyone effectively and has yet to be rested during Games 1 and 2 of the Finals.
During the regular season Elena Della Donne was the leading scorer and rebounder for the Mystics with averages of 19.5 points and 8.3 rebounds per game. Kristi Toliver was the leader in assists with an average 6.0 per game and the second leading scorer with an average of 13.0 points per game. In all, five players averaged double-figures in scoring for the Mystics.
During the regular season, Jonquel Jones was the leading scorer and leader in rebounds for the Sun with averages of 14.6 points and 9.7 rebounds per game. Jasmine Thomas was the fourth leading scorer with an average of 11.1 points per game and leader in assists with an average of 5.4 per game. Four players for the Sun averaged double figures in scoring.
