Houston Gamblers - 2022 USFL Season Preview

Last Updated: 04/06/2022 at 11:02 AM ET

The Houston Gamblers will open the USFL season led by head coach Kevin Sumlin who will make his return to the sideline with a plethora of coaching experience. Sumlin will bring knowledge from multiple college teams from a career that has stretched over a decade to Houston this season. Sumlin will rely heavily on QB Clayton Thorson to run his offense this year for Houston. Thorson is a former Philadelphia Eagle drafted in 2019 that threw for over 10,000 yards in college and ran for 20 touchdowns.

Running back Dalyn Dawkins will be leaned on early in the season by Houston with his NFL experience having been a Titans practice player for several years. Dawkins Is expected to get a lot of the early action but due to his small frame Mark Thompson will split the carries and action out of the backfield.

Most of the Houston offense comes from the XFL as five potential starters and 13 total players come from the league. Houston will also boast seven players from the AAF this season as tight end Brandon Barnes and Julian Allen will see a lot of action early on.

Defensively Houston will be a strong team with a host of players from the NFL and XFL spread across the field. The Houston defense is expected to be the strongest unit for the Gamblers early in the season. Jamar Summers and William Likely Are expected to anchor the Gamblers defense as each is expected to start at the cornerback position.
