The Birmingham Stallions will open the first season in USFL history with a home game at Protective Stadium against the New Jersey Generals on April 16th. Skip Holz will return to the sideline as the coach for the Birmingham Stallions following a 22 year college career that spanned across four different teams. Holz won more than 150 total games at the college level and took his teams to 12 different bowl games during his tenure.
Birmingham started the inaugural season by picking a QB in the USFL draft taking Alex McGough. McGough played his college ball at Florida International before eventually being picked in the seventh round of the 2018 NFL draft. McGough will bring exceptional athleticism and a cannon for an arm to lead the way for Birmingham in their first season.
J’Mar Smith was also taken in the draft by Birmingham who played four years at Louisiana Tech under coach Holz. Smith will add a different dynamic to the offense with a better ability to run the ball to go along with a strong arm that can hit receivers down the field. Victor Bolden is a former 49er but will most likely be receiver number one in the Birmingham offense.
Birmingham will lean on a strong defense with loads a football experience as several different players played in the NFL. Birmingham chose to take players with NFL experience to have a leg up heading into the season. The Birmingham defense is a deep team of talented professionals that will carry the load early in the season.
