At the 2021 ATP Mexican Open, Stefanos Tsitsipas is set to start his tournament against Benoit Paire from France.
Stefanos Tsitsipas last played at the Open 13 in France where he was eliminated during his second match. That being said, Tsitsipas played well in the tournament prior which was ATP Rotterdam where the Greek superstar made it to the semifinals. Tsitsipas also had a very strong Australian Open where he made the semifinals during which he defeated Gilles Simon and Rafael Nadal. Tsitsipas has established himself as an elite player and will be hoping to win many tournaments during the 2021 season.
On the other side of the coin, Benoit Parie enters this tournament in terrible form as he has only won 1 match all season. Paire played most of the tournaments during the South American leg but failed to make an impact in those tournaments. Furthermore, Benoit Parie seems to also be having issues off the court as he has been speaking against the ATP tour during the press conferences. This is expected to be an extremely tough start to the tournament for Benoit Parie as he is playing against the number 1 seed in the opening round.
Benoit Parie and Stefanos Tsitsipas have played each other twice in the past with both players winning on 1 occasion. The most recent match between these two players was in 2019 at Washington DC where Stefanos Tsitsipas won in straight sets. Paire defeated Tsitsipas in Metz in 2017. The win for Paire was also in straight sets.
Taking everything into consideration, I am going to pick Stefanos Tsitsipas to win this match. There is a big gap in skill between the two players and I see Benoit Paire having a big disadvantage, especially considering his recent form. This should not be a hard match for Stefanos Tsitsipas as I see him winning in straight sets.
