We have reached the semifinals of the 2020 ATP US Open in New York City where the number 2 seed, Dominic Thiem, will face the number 3 seed, Daniil Medvedev.
Dominic Thiem has had a tough draw with the likes of Marin Cilic in the same bracket but the Austrian has shown his class throughout the tournament and has won most of his matches in straight sets. In the previous round of the tournament, Dominic Thiem defeated Alex de Minaur in straight sets. It was a comfortable win for Thiem as he dominated the match with his receiving. During the win, Dominic Thiem won 50% of his receiving points which allowed him to break his opponent’s serve on 7 occasions. Thiem is looking in outstanding form and will be hoping to keep that going in this match and beyond.
On the other side of the coin, Daniil Medvedev enters this match having defeated Andrey Rublev in straight sets. It was a close match with Medvedev winning 2 tiebreakers during the win. In the match, Daniil Medvedev won all of his service games and 1 return game. Medvedev has been playing well this season and he has established himself as an elite player on the ATP tour. This is expected to be the biggest test of the tournament for Daniil Medvedev as he is playing against the highest ranked player remaining in the field.
This will be the third time that Medvedev and Thiem will be playing each other at an ATP tournament. Thiem has won twice in the past while Medvedev has won only once.
Looking at all the information, I see Dominic Thiem winning this match. Both Medvedev and Thiem are elite players but the Austrian has looked in better touch during this tournament. I expect this to be a close contest which Thiem wins in 4 or 5 sets.
