In the semifinals of the 2022 ATP Mexican Open, Daniil Medvedev is set to play against Rafael Nadal from Spain.
Daniil Medvedev has been in outstanding touch over the past few months and following a strong Australian Open campaign, he has continued to prove his worth at this event. Medvedev is the top seed at the Mexican Open and he enters this match following a simple straight sets victory in the previous round. It was an impressive performance by Medvedev as he dominated with his receiving. During the win, Medvedev won over 50% of his receiving points which allowed him to break his opponent’s serve on 6 occasions. Medvedev is looking very strong and he will be optimistic about his chances of defeating Nadal.
Looking at Nadal, the Spaniard has also been in outstanding touch and he has looked very comfortable this season. Nadal won the Australian Open and his strong form has continued into this tournament. In the previous round, Rafael Nadal defeated Tommy Paul. Nadal won the opening set 6-0 and the second set 7-6. Rafael Nadal is yet to lose a set at this tournament and has looked good for the entire event. This will be a tough challenge for Rafa but he has proven his worth every time he has been challenged.
Rafael Nadal and Daniil Medvedev met earlier in the season at the final of the Australian Open. It was a fascinating match where Nadal fought back to win the title in 5 sets. Overall, Nadal is leading the head-to-head match-up between these two players 4-1. Medvedev last defeated Nadal in 2020 at the ATP Finals.
Taking everything into consideration, I am going to pick Daniil Medvedev to win this match. Despite the recent record between these two players, I believe that Medvedev is currently a stronger player. Nadal has the experience of winning big tournaments thus his win at Melbourne Park but with not as much pressure on this clash, I see Daniil Medvedev being good enough to get the win.
