West Ham United hosts Manchester City on Sunday in the opening match of the 2022-23 English Premier League campaign for both. West Ham qualified for European competition with its seventh place finish. West Ham United reached the quarterfinals of the EFL Cup and the semifinals of the Europa League last season.

West Ham used the transfer market to add Gianluca Scamacca, Maxwel Cornet, Alphonse Areola and Flynn Downes. West Ham also was able to keep Declan Rice, who played excellent last season and was sought after by many clubs. Last weekend, West Ham United battled to a scoreless draw with Ligue 1 side Lens. 

Manchester City were the champions of the English Premier League last season finishing 29-6-3 on 93 points with a goal difference +73. The Citizens finished one point clear of second-placed Liverpool and 19 points ahead of third-placed Chelsea. Manchester City was defeated by Liverpool last weekend 3-1 in the Community Shield. The Citizens played just two pre-season fixtures defeating Club America 2-1 and Bayern Munich 1-0.

Pep Guardiola's side is again the favorite to win the Top Flight English league and have added to their squad with the signings of Erling Braut Haaland, who is considered one of the top offseason acquisitions in Europe, Kalvin Phillips, Julian Alvarez and Stefan Ortega. Manchester City follows its opening match on the road with a home match next weekend against Bournemouth.
