The final MLS-based match-up in the round of 32 of the US Open Cup comes on Wednesday night, when Real Salt Lake will play host to Sporting Kansas City. Both teams have been in really good form lately, but it is Sporting Kansas City who have been much more stable throughout the whole season.
Real Salt Lake are coming off a dominant performance against the Seattle Sounders, whom they defeated by 0-2 at home. The final score is not indicative of Real Salt Lake’s performance in that match, who were not at all threatened. They are starting to find stability lately, as they have now won four of their last five (4-1-0). Real Salt Lake have now climbed to the 3rd spot of the Western Conference with 22 points after 14 matches (7-6-1), six behind Conference leaders Sporting Kansas City. Real Salt Lake have the best home record in the Conference (6-1-0), having scored at least twice in each of their last five.
Sporting Kansas City were also engaged in a really easy match on Sunday, when they destroyed Minnesota United by a massive 1-4 at home. They took an early lead but were equalized just minutes later, only to score two more goals by the end of the first half. They are now undefeated in their last five (3-0-2), having kept three clean sheets in that span and conceding just two goals. They are still riding at the top of the Western Conference with 28 points, with FC Dallas just two points behind. SKC have been really good on the road so far (3-1-2), where they have scored at least twice on four occasions.
