Both teams are coming off wins in the US Open Cup, that were also against MLS teams. These two rivals have been in really good form lately, and this is going to be exciting.
The Portland Timbers (6-3-3) were up against the San Jose Earthquakes in the 4th round of the US Open Cup. They took advantage of their opponents’ weaknesses and scored a goal in each half to eventually win by 0-2. The Timbers have been in really solid form lately, as they have won seven of their last eight matches in all competitions (7-0-1). They are now sitting at the 5th spot of the Western Conference with 21 points, just one point ahead of the 3rd Real Salt Lake. They have been as good at home (4-0-1), where they have scored multiple goals in four.
Sporting Kansas City (8-2-4) are also coming off a victory in the US Open Cup. They were hosted by Real Salt Lake on Wednesday and escaped with a 2-0 win. They scored both goals in the second half, and comfortably moved to the next round. That win extended their undefeated streak to six matches in all competitions (4-0-2), having kept four clean sheets in that span. Sporting Kansas City have been in really great shape this season and are still sitting at the top of the Western Conference with 28 points. When it comes to away matches, SKC have the 2nd best record (3-1-2) and have scored at least twice in five so far.
