Schalke at Dortmund 5/16/20 - Bundesliga Picks & Predictions
The Bundesliga comes back to life with a really interesting derby on Saturday, called the Ruhr Derby between Dortmund and Schalke. A couple of years back this same match went from 0-4 to 4-4 in the second half, and matches between these two teams are always exciting.
Schalke (9-6-10) had a really tough time getting results before the break, as they were win-less in their last nine matches in all competitions (0-5-4). They scored just one goal in their last five matches, and conceded 10 in the process. Even so, Schalke are currently 6th in the Bundesliga with 37 points, one ahead of Wolfsburg and Freiburg. They have not been anything special on the road so far (4-4-4), failing to win their last six and not scoring in their last four.
On the other hand, Dortmund (15-4-6) went into the forced break after a 0-2 loss on the road in the Champions League round of 16 against PSG and were eliminated. However, that loss came after five straight wins in all competitions, with Dortmund scoring 11 goals and conceding just two in that span. They are still sitting 2nd in the league table with 51 points, four behind Bayern Munich and just one ahead of RB Leipzig. Dortmund have been excellent at home so far in the season (9-0-3), scoring a whopping 41 goals and conceding just 10 in the process.
The two teams split the points in a goal-less draw in the first round, which was the fifth draw in the last eight matches between the two. The two teams exchanged away wins last season, which was Schalke’s only win in this venue in the last six matches (1-2-3). I will take my chances with backing Schalke here, who have proved to be quite a hard nut to crack over the years.
