The Portland Timbers were one of the teams to be matched against another MLS side in the fourth round of the US Open Cup. However, they are lucky enough to have been matched against a San Jose Earthquakes side who have been really bad so far in the season. San Jose will now travel to Portland for this match, looking to overcome their struggles.
Portland are coming into this match after being stuck to a 1-1 draw at home against the LA Galaxy over the weekend. They were really good in that match but failed to record their seventh consecutive win. Even so, they have been in really great form lately and all season for that matter. They are now sitting at the 5th spot of the Western Conference with 21 points, having scored 20 goals, against 18 conceded. Moreover, they have been excellent at home so far (4-0-1), where they have scored 10 goals, against just 4 conceded.
San Jose are coming off yet another loss, this time by 1-2 on the road against Chicago. The Quakes started the season with a win against Minnesota, but they have won just one of their 12 matches ever since (1-8-3). They are one of the worst teams in the MLS right now and are currently sitting at the 10th spot of the Western Conference with just 9 points. They have been equally bad on the road so far (1-5-2), where they have conceded multiple goals on five occasions, while failing to score just once in that span.
