Liverpool won both matches against Manchester City in the quarter-finals of the Champions League, and are now through to the semis. They were quite lucky with the draw, as they were matched against Roma, while the other semi-final is between two much stronger teams, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich. The first leg of this tie will take place in Liverpool on Tuesday.

Liverpool were amazing in the previous round against Manchester City, as they managed to win both at home and away, and moved through on 5-1 aggregate. They have played against Serie A clubs a total of 25 matches, and their record stands at 9-11-5. At home they have a 6-4-0 record, having lost two of their last three. However, their overall record in two-legged knockout ties against Italian clubs in UEFA competitions is W4 L2, having won each of the last two. This season they were undefeated at home in the Champions League, picking up seven points in the Group stage. They played for a draw against Porto in the round of 16, and destroyed Manchester City by 0-3 in the quarter-finals. Roma pulled a massive upset in the previous round against the mighty Barcelona. They had lost at the first leg on the road by a harsh 1-4, but that away goal gave them some hope. They went on to score three goals at home in the second leg, and eventually went through on away goals (4-4 aggregate). It was only the third time a first-leg deficit of three goals or more had been retrieved in the UEFA Champions League era. Roma won their first three two-legged knockout ties against English clubs – but have since lost six out of six. Their last three trips to England have all ended in draws, and have won just one of their 16 away matches there.

The two teams have only met twice in the competition, back in 2001/02, where after a goal-less draw in Rome, Liverpool won by 0-2 in this venue. Roma have not fared well on English soil, and Liverpool will surely be extra careful in the first leg at home. Also, Mohamed Salah used to play for Roma last season, so he might know a few of their tricks.
