Two teams in the opposite sides of the Eastern Conference will lock horns on Sunday, when Columbus will host Philadelphia. Columbus Crew woke up a bit too late and cannot make the playoffs this season. Philadelphia Union can still mathematically capture the top spot but it’s a long shot.
Philadelphia Union (16-9-7) are coming off a really nice 2-1 away win against San Jose, scoring two late goals to come back from behind. That win came after a two-match slump where Philadelphia grabbed just one points. They are sitting at the 2nd spot of the Eastern Conference with 55 points, six behind New York City and one ahead of Atlanta. They have been quite competitive on the road (6-7-3) but have lost four of their last six, without even scoring.
Columbus (9-15-8) conceded a late goal deep into the stoppage time of their away match against Vancouver for the final 1-1 draw. That tough draw mathematically destroyed their chances for a playoff spot, as they are sitting at the 11th spot with 35 points, now seven behind the 7th spot with just two matches to play. Columbus have been equally mediocre at home this season (5-6-5), having not kept a single clean sheet in their last 12 league matches.
