Liverpool hosts Newcastle United in Week 5 of the 2022-23 Premier League season on Aug. 31.
The Reds (1-2-1) are coming off a 9-0 victory over Bournemouth that tied the league record for goals in a match. Liverpool started fast with goals from Luis Díaz and Harvey Elliott in under six minutes and led 5-0 at the half after scores by Trent Alexander-Arnold, Roberto Firmino and Virgil van Dijk. Firmino and Diaz each scored again in the second half while Fabio Carvalho got his first goal with the club and Bournemouth had an own goal.
Newcastle (1-3-0) avoided its first loss of the season against Wolverhampton with a last-minute goal by Allan Saint-Maximin on Sunday. The Magpies are expected to have club-record signing Alexander Isak of Sweden available against Liverpool.
Liverpool has won 31 and drawn 12 of its 54 Premier League matches against Newcastle United. The Reds’ success against the Magpies continued a year ago with wins of 1-0 and 3-1. Newcastle last beat Liverpool on Dec. 6, 2015. The Reds have gone 7-4-0 in the last 11 meetings between the two clubs.
Liverpool is a heavy favorite in this one but don’t expect another nine-goal performance from the Reds. The chances of there being at least four goals scored in the match are pretty good with at least one coming from the Magpies. Liverpool allowed at least one goal in each of its first three matches, including a 2-2 draw with Fulham. Final Score Prediction: Liverpool wins 3-1.
