Two very old Eastern Conference rivals will begin the season against one another on Saturday, when Columbus Crew will host the New York Red Bulls. The Red Bulls are coming off a really successful season, and they even beat Columbus Crew in the playoffs.

Columbus Crew were actually pretty solid last season, finishing 5th in the Conference with a 14-11-9 record. They were really strong at home as usual, losing just two of their 17 matches (11-2-4). They fought really hard in the knock-out round against DC United on the road, where they needed the extra time and the penalty shoot-out in order to eliminate their opponents. But they were bested by the Red Bulls in the Conference semi-finals and will now look for revenge. The New York Red Bulls made a terrific run in the regular season and eventually won the Supporters’ Shield. They topped the Eastern Conference with 71 points (22-7-5), literally in the final match-day of the regular season. They were pretty strong on the road as well, where they had one of the best records in the Conference (8-5-4). After beating Columbus in the playoffs they fell in the Conference finals against Atlanta United, but it was a successful season overall.

The two teams exchanged home wins in the playoffs last season, but Columbus had a draw at home and an away win in the regular season matches. Columbus have also been great as hosts lately (4-0-2) and they have been reinforced in the transfer window. I will back the hosts here.
