Minnesota United FC vs. Vancouver Whitecaps FC 10/9/22 - Major League Soccer Picks & Predictions

Minnesota United hosts the Vancouver Whitecaps in a MLS Western Conference fixture on Sunday. Minnesota is seventh in the conference table at 13-6-14 on 45 points with a goal difference -5. Minnesota holds a one-point lead over eighth place Real Salt Lake and must take points from Sunday’s match to have any hope of qualifying for the postseason.

Minnesota lost for the fifth time in its last six matches when losing 2-0 to San Jose last Saturday. This is only the second time Minnesota has taken only one point from a stretch of six matches since July of 2018. Emanuel Reynoso is the leading goal scorer for Minnesota with 10, while Luis Amarilla has scored nine. Reynoso is the leader in assists with six.

Vancouver is ninth in the conference table at 12-7-14 on 43 points with a goal difference of -15. Vancouver is two points adrift of seventh place and must win on Sunday versus Minnesota and hope that Real Salt Lake loses to the Portland Timbers or earns only a draw to earn a berth in the postseason. Vancouver defeated Austin 2-0 last time out, giving the Whitecaps the opportunity of reaching the postseason.

Vancouver has posted three consecutive victories which is the first time since August of last year. Each of the three victories was at home but Vancouver will be on the road Sunday versus Minnesota and is winless over its last seven matches on the road with four draws and three losses. Lucas Cavallini is the leading goal scorer for Vancouver with nine, while Ryan Gauld is the leader in assists with five.

Minnesota defeated Vancouver in Vancouver 3-1 earlier this season on July 8. However, neither of the two sides has defeated the other twice in the same season. Vancouver has three consecutive victories and will use that momentum on the road to pull off an upset and defeat Minnesota to prevent the Loons from qualifying in the postseason. Final Score Prediction, Vancouver Whitecaps win 3-2.
