Manchester United at Southampton FC 8/27/22 - Premier League Picks & Predictions

Manchester United (1-0-2) travels to Southampton (1-1-1) in Week 4 of the 2022-23 Premier League season. Both clubs won 2-1 in Week 3 to claim their first victories of the young campaign.

Manchester United jumped on fierce rival Liverpool early via a Jadon Sancho goal in the 16th minute. Marcus Rashford scored early in the second half to put the Red Devils up 2-0 before Mohamed Salah got one back for Liverpool in the 81st minute. Manager Erik ten Hag's benching of £26,800,000 player Cristiano Ronaldo and captain Harry Maguire to start the match had United looking like a completely different team from the one that was embarrassed by Brentford the week prior.

Southampton trailed 1-0 early in the second half at Leicester City after James Maddison scored on a free kick in the 54th minute, but the match would soon turn The Saints' way. Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhüttl's decision to substitute Che Adams for Sékou Mara in the 59th minute paid off in a big way with two goals from the Leicester native. Adams put Armel Bella-Kotchap's lay off from a long throw-in into the net just nine minutes after entering the contest. He later volleyed a delivery from James Ward-Prowse past the Leicester defense in the 84th minute to secure the victory. Leicester dominated possession of the ball in the first half and the beginning of the second, but The Saints feisty defense held the Foxes to just six shots, with only one on target for the day.

In 48 Premier League meetings between these two clubs, Manchester United has 27 wins to Southampton's 7, but they played to 1-1 draws in both contests in the 2021-22 season.

Manchester United will need to show the same levels of aggression and physicality it did while hosting Liverpool in Week 3 if it is to claim victory at Southampton. Goaltender David De Gea and the Red Devils’ defense looked much better in the win over Liverpool, but we think Southampton manages to find the net in this one, likely in the second half. If The Saints allow the Red Devils to dominate possession like Leicester City did, this will not be a happy day for the faithful at St. Mary’s Stadium. Final Score Prediction: Manchester United 2-1.
