Manchester United at Sevilla 2/21/18 - Champions League Picks & Predictions

Spanish side Sevilla have reached the round of 16 of the Champions League on three occasions in the past, but they have never made it past this round. They are now up against a really hard task, when they will play host to Manchester United on Wednesday. Manchester United have a great history in Spain, having lost just once in their last eight.

Sevilla were placed in Group E of the Champions League this season, along with Liverpool, Spartak Moscow and Maribor. They did a great job losing just once (2-1-3), and finished at the 2nd spot with 9 points. They will now look to change their terrible record in the round of 16 of the competition, where they have lost in all three previous attempts. The Spanish club have won six of their last nine European home matches, losing one and drawing the other two. Sevilla's record in two-legged knockout ties against Premier League sides is W1 L1. Aside from last season's defeat by Leicester, they beat Tottenham by 4-3 on aggregate in the quarter-finals of their victorious 2006/07 UEFA Cup campaign (2-1 home, 2-2 away). Manchester United had a really easy job in their respective group of the Champions League. They finished at the top spot with 15 points (5-1-0), in a group that also featured Basel, CSKA Moscow and Benfica. They are now entering their tenth round of 16 of the competition (W6 L3), and their first after 2013/14. Having lost their first two round of 16 contests, United have won all but one of the most recent seven. However, they have won just two of their nine away games at this tage (2-3-4). They have been great in European competitions lately, as they have only lost two of their last 18 matches regardless of venue (13-2-3). Their only loss this season, to Basel, ended a seven-game unbeaten European away record (5-0-2).

Manchester United have played 50 times against La Liga clubs, featuring a record of 13-17-20. That record transforms to 3-10-10 on the road. Sevilla's record at home against Premier League sides stands at 3-1-1, and they are traditionally strong at home. I will go with both teams to score here, with the 1-1 being a realistic score.
