This is a clash between two teams that are coming off massive losses over the weekend, as Union Berlin will play host to Mainz on Wednesday. Union Berlin lost badly in the Berlin derby against Hertha, while Mainz met an even heavier loss in the hands of RB Leipzig.
Union Berlin (9-15-3) were no match for city opponents Hertha Berlin in the big derby, as they failed to have a single shot on the opposing target, while conceding four goals for a massive loss. They have now lost four in a row in all competitions and are win-less in their last five. Moreover, they have conceded multiple goals in all five matches. Union Berlin are now at the 13th spot of the league table with 30 points, six ahead of the relegation zone. They have been mediocre at home so far (6-6-1), winning just one of their last five (1-3-1).
Mainz (8-16-3) are coming off a devastating 5-0 loss at home against RB Leipzig, in a match that was really out of their league. Prior to that they weren’t so bad, with just one loss in their previous six matches. Even so, Mainz are now sitting at the 15th spot of the league table with 27 points, just one below the red line. They have a 4-8-1 record on the road, scoring 21 and conceding 34 goals in the process. They have a 2-2-1 record in their last five away matches, keeping just one clean sheet but scoring at least twice in three of those matches.
Union Berlin won by 3-2 in the reverse fixture in the first round, but that was just their second win over Mainz in the last two decades (2-4-1). Neither team is in good shape lately and this is a fight to avoid the relegation, with Union Berlin slightly having the upper hand.
