Liverpool FC at Manchester United 8/22/22 - Premier League Picks & Predictions

Manchester United fans are expecting the worst as Liverpool comes to Old Trafford on Aug. 22. Neither club has a win through two weeks of Premier League play, but Liverpool has yet to lose either with two draws.

In the season opener against Fulham, Liverpool trailed 1-0 at the half before Darwin Núñez tied it with a goal in the 64th minute. Fulham took the lead again eight minutes later as Aleksander Mitrovic got his second goal of the match, this time on a penalty kick. The Reds pulled even in the 80th minute as Mohamed Salah secured the tie with an assist from Núñez.

Liverpool also trailed 1-0 at the half against Crystal Palace in Week 2. Núñez played a big role in this contest as well, but not in a good way. He was shown a red card early in the second half for headbutting Palace’s Joachim Andersen and now faces a three-match suspension for his violent conduct. Luis Díaz scored shortly after Núñez was tossed from the match, but Liverpool wouldn’t find the net again and had to settle for a draw.

Manchester United has gotten off to a terrible start this season. The Red Devils lost 2-1 at home to Brighton in Week 1, trailing 2-0 at halftime before getting a gift of an own goal by Brighton off of a corner kick in the second half. United’s second outing was far worse, an embarrassing 4-0 loss to Brentford with all four goals coming in the first 35 minutes.

The Red Devils’ fans are furious with the team's performance but lay much of the blame on its owners, especially co-chairman Joel Glazer. Many plan to make their voices heard by not attending the match against Liverpool, the clubs biggest rival. Should be an interesting day at Old Trafford.

Manchester United holds the advantage in the all-time series with 28 wins and 14 draws in 60 Premier League matches, but Liverpool has dominated recent meetings. The Reds have beaten the Red Devils in three straight  – 4-0, 5-0 and 4-2 – and have not lost a match to United since March 2018. In the eight meetings since then, Liverpool is 5-3-0.

Liverpool will be without Núñez and has some injury concerns, but we expect them to cruise to victory in this one as Manchester United lacks the physicality to hang with the Reds for long. If United is to have any chance in this contest, David de Gea will have to be better in goal. He has the backing of manager Erik ten Hag for now, but United can’t afford another performance like the one he had against Brentford. Add in the turmoil off the field  – Cristiano Ronaldo wants out, a failure to land significant transfers, an absentee ownership group, etc. – and it becomes clear that United is a mess right now. We like Liverpool -1.5. Final Score Prediction: Liverpool 4-0.
