Saint Etienne might have done a massive undefeated run in the past three months, but they destroyed what they built with their last two performances. They are coming off two consecutive losses that have dropped them outside the top-six, and now their fate is not in their own hands. They will need a win when they will play host to Lille on Saturday, also hoping that other results will go their way.
Saint Etienne (14-13-10) will be kicking themselves in the aftermath of their last two matches. They could have grabbed at least two points from those two matches, but they conceded late goals that forced them to lose both. They have now dropped outside of the spots that lead to the European competitions next season. They are sitting at the 8th spot with 52 points, just as many as Bordeaux, while both teams are two points behind Nice. Saint Etienne will need a win and both the other teams to lose in order to grab the ticket.
Lille (10-19-8) have had an uncharacteristically bad season, as they were threatened by relegation. The team that was challenging the top spots of the Ligue 1 not too long ago have had a poor season, and only mathematically avoided the relegation in the previous match. They were up against Dijon, who actually took the lead at the 11th minute, but Lille had already overturned the lead in their favor by the end of the first half. Their three consecutive wins have saved what was a really poor season, so Lille will now start planning for next season.
