Following a two-month lay-off, top-flight soccer returned in Germany last weekend. Despite the strange circumstances, there were plenty of exciting matchups.
Borussia Dortmund thrashed bitter rivals Schalke 4-0, while there were also victories for Bayern Munich and Borussia Monchengladbach. Meanwhile, RB Leipzig were held to a 1-1 draw by Freiburg.
Matchday 27 will kick off on Friday with the colossal Berlin derby between Hertha and Union, and there are plenty of other thrilling games for us to look forward to.
Here are the best bets for Matchday 27 of the 2019/20 German Bundesliga season.
Paderborn vs. Hoffenheim – 05/23/20
Paderborn – the division’s bottom club – returned with a goalless draw against relegation rivals Fortuna Dusseldorf in the previous round. Paderborn are still 10 points from certain safety, although recent performances suggest they are up for the fight. On the other hand, Hoffenheim were hammered 3-0 by Hertha last weekend, meaning they have failed to win any of their last six games. Hoffenheim come into this game as the favorites at 2.00, while the Paderborn win is at 3.10. I’m not sure if Paderborn have got what it takes to steal all three points. But given Hoffenheim’s wretched run, I can see the home side snatching a point.
Pick: Paderborn and Draw (Double Chance) - 1.80
Wolfsburg vs. Borussia Dortmund – 05/23/20
Both Wolfsburg and Dortmund were involved in games that produced over 2.5 goals last time out. The Wolves scored an injury-time winner to beat Augsburg 2-1, while Dortmund smashed Schalke 4-0. Second-place Dortmund are the league’s second-highest scorers behind Bayern, but they also have the worst defensive record in top six. Simply put, Lucien Favre’s men know where the back of the opposition net is, but they often struggle to keep the ball out of their own. Wolfsburg are currently sixth, so they are more than capable of troubling Dortmund. It’s difficult to predict which way this game will go, but there will almost certainly be goals.
Pick: Over 2.5 Goals and Both Teams to Score – 2.05
Mainz vs. RB Leipzig – 05/24/20
Mainz returned to action with a 2-2 draw at FC Koln last weekend. Despite coming from two goals down to rescue a point, Mainz are still just four points clear of the bottom three. No Bundesliga team has conceded more goals than Mainz in 2019/20, but they have scored more goals than eight sides in the division. RB Leipzig were held to a 1-1 draw by Freiburg last time out, leaving Julian Nagelsmann’s side seven points behind first-place Bayern. Leipzig have some ground to make up in the title race, so I can see them flying out the blocks against a struggling Mainz outfit. With that in mind, I’m backing Leipzig to win both halves.
Pick: RB Leipzig to Win Half Time/Full Time – 2.20
