Peru will now begin their World Cup duties with a hard match against Denmark on Saturday. Denmark will be looking to fight off Peru in this match, as a loss here would destroy their qualifying chances. With France set to top the group, this is a very crucial match as to who will capture the 2nd spot.
Peru finished at the 5th spot of the CONMEBOL qualifying group with 26 points, just as many as Chile but with better goal difference. They remained undefeated in their last eight qualifying matches, against some strong opponents like Colombia, Argentina and Uruguay. They had to play an inter-continental playoff against New Zealand, where after a goal-less draw on the road they won by 0-2 at home. Since then they have played five friendlies (4-0-1), and were actually pretty great as they defeated Croatia, Iceland and Scotland among others.
Denmark are in the World Cup for the fifth time in their history, and their best run was in 1998 when they reached the quarter-finals. They had a rather easy job in the World Cup qualifiers, as they finished at the 2nd spot of Group E (6-2-2). They are looking to go past the group phase, as they are in a really favorable group. However, they will need to be really careful against Peru and Australia, as both teams can cause damage. Their biggest asset is Tottenham’s midfielder Christian Eriksen, who is one of the strongest midfielders in the Premier League.
