Toronto Maple Leafs at Winnipeg Jets 10/22/22 - NHL Picks & Predictions

The Winnipeg Jets host the Toronto Maple Leafs on Oct. 22 for the first meeting between these two teams this season. Winnipeg and Toronto split last season, with each team winning on its home ice.

Toronto last played Thursday, beating the Dallas Stars 3-2 in overtime to improve to 3-2. Nick Robertson had two goals in his first game of the season for the Maple Leafs, including the game winner in OT. Auston Matthews got the assist on the winning goal for his only point of the night. Robertson was recalled from the minors when goaltender Matt Murray was placed on injured reserve.

Toronto led 2-1 1:59 into the third period, but Dallas pulled even on a power-play goal at 7:21. Alexander Kerfoot scored Toronto’s first goal of the game with an assist from Michael Bunting, who had two assists total. Ilya Samsonov started in goal and had 26 saves. Samsonov should be in goal again against the Jets.

Winnipeg played Thursday as well, losing 5-2 on the road to the Vegas Golden Knights. The Jets dropped to 2-2 with the loss. Vegas led 4-0 after the first period and 4-1 after the second. Winnipeg cut the lead to 4-2 midway through the third period before surrendering and empty-netter with 22 seconds to play.

David Rittich had 27 saves in goal for Winnipeg, but Connor Hellebuyck is the likely starter against Toronto. Neal Pionk and Pierre-Luc Dubois each had a goal for Winnipeg. Pionk also had an assist.

Toronto’s three wins have all been 3-2 scores. The first two game against Washington and Ottawa. The Leafs gave up four goals in each of the two losses, falling 4-2 to Arizona on Oct. 17 and 4-3 to Montreal in the season opener.

Winnipeg beat Colorado, 4-3, in overtime Oct. 19 and topped the New York Rangers, 4-1, to open the season. The Jets other loss came Oct. 17, as they fell 4-1 to Dallas.

Neither team has showed much consistency early on, but Toronto gets a boost on offense with Robertson being called up. As long as Samsonov continues his solid play in net, the Maple Leafs should get the win at Winnipeg. Final Score Prediction: Toronto Maple Leafs win 3-2.
