Traditional NHL powers will square off on Wednesday night, when the Toronto Maple Leafs invade the Bell Centre to take on the Montreal Canadiens. The Maple Leafs (54-21-7) finished second in the Atlantic Division and lost to Tampa Bay in the first round of the Eastern Conference playoffs. On Saturday, Toronto wrapped up their preseason with a convincing 5-1 home victory versus Detroit.

NHL goal leader Auston Matthews scored two of Toronto’s three goals in the third period. William Nylander added two goals and Morgan Rielly contributed three assists for the Maple Leafs.

The Montreal Canadiens are coming off a franchise record worst season and are trying to improve for head coach Martin St. Louis. The Canadiens return talented scorers Cole Caufield and Nick Suzuki, but have lost all eight preseason games. On Saturday, Montreal was outshot 34-22 during a 3-2 overtime loss against Ottawa.

Cole Caufield got the scoring started for Montreal on a power play goal assisted by Chris Wideman and Sean Monahan. Kaiden Guhle added his third goal of the preseason for the Canadiens.
