San Francisco 49ers at Carolina Panthers 10/9/22 - NFL Picks & Predictions

The Carolina Panthers play at home for the fourth time already this season as they host the San Francisco 49ers in Week 5. Homefield hasn’t been much of an advantage though, as the Panthers are 1-2 in Charlotte.

Carolina is 1-3 straight up and against the spread and are 1-2 ATS at home. The 49ers are 0-2 on the road and 2-2 overall. San Francisco is 2-2 ATS the spread and 0-2 ATS on the road.

The Panthers lost to the Arizona Cardinals, 26-16, at home as one-point favorites in Week 4. Carolina led 10-3 at the break but allowed 24 unanswered points in the second half before Christian McCaffery caught a 13-yard TD pass from Baker Mayfield with 4:47 left. That was the Panther’s lone offensive touchdown in the game. Frankie Luvu had the other, scoring the first points of the game with a 33-yard interception return early in the second quarter.

McCaffery accounted for 108 of Carolina’s 220 yards total offense against Arizona. He is averaging 67.5 rushing yards and 34.5 receiving yards per game. Mayfield threw two interceptions after only having one in the first three games. He also lost his first fumble despite having six total for the season. He is averaging 186.8 yards passing per game.

The 49ers are coming off a dominant, 24-9, win over the Los Angeles Rams at home Monday night. It was a nice rebound from a 11-10 loss at Denver in Week 3. Jimmy Garoppolo completed 16-of-27 passes for 239 yards. Garoppolo’s only touchdown pass of the game was a spectacular catch and run for 57 yards by Deebo Samuel in the second quarter.

Samuel is averaging 61.5 yards receiving and 28.3 yards rushing per game. Jeff Wilson Jr., who had a 32-yard TD run in the first quarter against the Rams, is averaging 63.8 yards rushing and 14.5 yards receiving. Garoppolo has thrown a TD pass in each of the last three games with just one interception on the year. He is averaging 225 yards passing over the last two games.

San Francisco should have no trouble beating Carolina by seven-plus points. The Panthers don’t have much talent on offense beyond McCaffrey, and he’s likely in for a rough day with the 49ers allowing just 2.9 yards a run. It wouldn’t be all that surprising to see Talanoa Hufanga get another pick six this week after his 52-yard return for a TD against Los Angeles. We may need a couple of defensive scores to get past 38.5 points in this one given how good the 49ers defense has been and how bad the Panthers offense is. Final Score Prediction: San Francisco 49ers win and cover 27-13.
