Last season was disappointing for the Miami Dolphins as they had to deal with the fallout from Hurricane Irma by playing 16 straight weeks and ended the season 6-10. Major personnel changes were made shortly after the season ended and quarterback Ryan Tannehill returns from a season-long knee injury, creating optimism in south Florida for the 2018 squad. Fans are hoping the Dolphins can win their first playoff game in 17 seasons this year.

The coaching staff for the Dolphins has given a vote of confidence to Tannehill as they did not trade their No. 12 pick in the draft in search of a new QB, but head coach Adam Gase did sign Brock Osweiler to back up Tannehill.

Miami traded top wide receiver Jarvis Landry to the Browns and coaches hope that two additions through free agency Danny Amendola from New England and Albert Wilson from Kansas City will make up for the loss of Landry and gel with the current corps of Kenny Stills, DeVante Parker and Jakeem Grant. Tight end is a weak link with Mike Gisicki the likely starter. At running back, the Dolphins added Frank Gore to help incumbent Kenyan Drake. Gore will be a good compliment to the capable Drake. However, the offensive line is suspect. Josh Sitton was added at left guard from the Bears as was Daniel Kilgore at center from the 49ers, but the team needs more from Ja’Waun James and Laremy Tunsil at the two tackle spots. Right guard will be a decision at training camp between Jesse Davis and Ted Larsen.

Last season eight rookies at times played on defense with the top ones being Davon Godchaux at defensive tackle and Cordrea Tankersley at cornerback with both expected to start this season. Godchaux and Jordan Phillips need to fill in for the absence of Ndamukong Suh on the front four. Miami picked up Robert Quinn in a trade with the Rams, which helps the line. With Quinn, William Hayes, Cameron Wake and rookie Charles Harris the rush from the edge should be strong, especially if Andre Branch comes back strong from a poor 2017 season.

Reshad Jones anchors the Dolphins secondary leading the league last season in tackles with 122. Xavien Howard will be a starter at corner following a strong 2017 season. Minkah Fitzpatrick was picked in the first round to play safety and T.J. McDonald could be moved to a role of both safety and linebacker. Raekwon McMillian missed all of his rookie season in 2017 with a knee injury and should anchor the linebacker corps, while Jerome Baker a pick in the third round, should find a starting spot on the outside opposite Kiko Alonso.

Odds makers have given the Dolphins an over/under win total of 6.5. Last season the team won 6 games with Jay Cutler under center and should win at least 7 or more in 2018 with Tannehill back. However, if the Dolphins do not make a dramatic improvement both Gase and Tannehill may not be asked back in 2019. The Dolphins stay healthy and in easy division get to 8-8 on the season.
