The Kansas City Chiefs enter the 2019 NFL season as one of the favorites to win the Super Bowl. Head coach Andy Reid has a knack for regular season success, but has yet to lead his team to a Vince Lombardi Trophy. Reigning MVP Pat Mahomes returns to lead the Chiefs’ offense after throwing for 5,097 yards and 50 touchdowns last year.
TE Travis Kelce is Mahomes’ top option in the passing game and could be the best player at his position now that Rob Gronkowski has retired. WR Tyreek Hill is the most explosive weapon in a Chiefs’ offense that led the league in yards gained and points scored. No matter how great the Kansas City offense performs, an overhauled defense is the key to their ultimate success this season. Veteran DC Steve Spagnuolo will shift the Chiefs to a 4-3 scheme and must find a way to improve on a rush defense that allowed 5.0 yards per rush. DE Frank Clark was brought in from Seattle, where he recorded 13 sacks last season.
The biggest addition to the Kansas City defense was acquiring big-play S Tyrann Mathieu. The rest of the secondary is unproven and could be the Achilles heel for the Chiefs.
The early part of the season sets up favorably for the Chiefs, which will allow the defense time to grow. There is no doubt that Mahomes and company will have Kansas City at the top of the AFC West Division standings. Take the Chiefs to exceed their season win projection total.
