Houston Texans 2019 Season Preview - NFL Picks & Predictions

The Houston Texans enter the 2019 campaign as the defending AFC South Division Champs and looking to take the next step. For the Texans to become Super Bowl contenders, third-year QB Deshaun Watson will have to be more consistent. Watson threw for 4.165 yards, but took a league high 62 sacks a season ago.

WR DeAndre Hopkins is coming off a season in which he posted career highs in catches (115) and yards (1,572). Lamar Miller is quietly effective enough in a Houston running game that ranked 8th in the NFL with 126 yards per game. Houston is blessed to have the best DE combo in the league, with J.J. Watt and Jadeveon Clowney. Watt has been to the Pro Bowl five times and is coming off a productive 16-sack season. Clowney has racked 18,5 sacks over the last two years, but the Texans chose to use their franchise tag rather than extend him.

It was not a stellar offseason for the Texans in many regards, including losing DBs Tyrann Mathieu and Kareem Jackson in free agency. The Texans ranked 28th in pass defense in 2018 and could have even more holes in the secondary this year.

The Texans cruised to 11 regular season victories behind the strength of a very talented group of core players. Houston rode the fourth easiest schedule in 2018, but now face an absolutely brutal slate that is predicted as the hardest in the league. Look for the Texans to take a step back and stay under their projected win total. Final Season Prediction, Houston Texans Under 8.5 Wins.
