Dallas Cowboys 2019 NFL Season Preview

Last Updated: 08/13/2019 at 10:43 AM ET

The Dallas Cowboys are one of the NFL’s youngest teams. Star running back Ezekiel Elliott is just 23, quarterback Dak Prescott is 25 and wide receiver Amari Cooper is just 25. Other star players on both sides of the ball are 28 years of age or younger. The Cowboys have a bright future. All 22 players that started the Cowboys playoff game last season return.

In addition, Jason Witten has unretired and will return at tight end. The Cowboys also acquired wide out Randall Cobb to play opposite Cooper. Defensively the Cowboys added Robert Quinn at defensive end. Dallas drafted Connor McGovern who will eventually become their starter at offensive left guard, while Trysten Hill was drafted to eventually start at defensive tackle.
Offense - Dak Prescott has not missed a start under center in three seasons. The signal caller is not a spectacular playmaker, but does not make mistakes and is accurate with his passes. Ezekiel Elliott is one of the NFL’s most talented running backs and has led the league in rushing two of the last three seasons. Amari Cooper revived Dallas’ offense after being acquired late last season and with the addition of Randall Cobb and the return of Witten, the passing attack will be as dangerous as the running game.

Defense - DeMarcus Lawrence anchors a defense that could be one of the NFC’s best. Last season Lawrence had 10.5 sacks. Robert Quinn was picked up in a trade with Miami and last season had 6.5 sacks and 38 tackles with the Dolphins. Leighton Vander Esch and Jaylon Smith are one of the NFL’s best duos at linebacker. George Iloka was signed to take over at strong safety and rookie Donovan Wilson will see time in the secondary as well, with Chidobe Awuzie starting at one corner and Xavier Woods the starter at free safety.

As is the case almost every season, coach Jason Garrett will be on the hot seat. The NFC East title last season saved Garrett’s job and the Cowboys are expected to win another division title in 2019. The nucleus of offensive skill players and the addition of Robert Quinn on the defensive line with a strong linebackers unit will make Dallas the team to beat in the NFC East and a contender for the NFC crown with the Rams, Saints, Eagles and Bears. Projected win total 11.
