Carolina Panthers at New England Patriots 8/19/22 - NFL Preseason Picks & Predictions

Gillette Stadium will play host to a Friday night NFL preseason battle between the Carolina Panthers and the New England Patriots. The Panthers have won just five games in each of the last three seasons and are looking to turn the corner for head coach Matt Rhule. Carolina has improved their offensive line and could be a playoff contender if Rb Christian McCaffrey can stay healthy.

On Saturday, Zane Gonzalez nailed a 45-yard field goal with 24 seconds remaining to lift Carolina to a 23-21 road victory against Washington. Sam Darnold threw a first quarter touchdown pass to Rashard Higgins that gave the Panthers a 10-0 lead.

The New England Patriots are no longer the top team in the AFC East Division, but figure to push the Buffalo Bills. Second year QB Mac Jones outperformed the rest of the rookie QB class, throwing for 22 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. New England features one of the top offensive lines in football and will lean on a power running game.

On Thursday, New England did not play most of their starters during a 23-21 home loss versus the New York Giants. Rookie QB Bailey Zappe impressed with 205 yards passing and a touchdown in a losing effort for the Patriots.

Carolina LB Shaq Thompson (knee) was second on the team in tackles last season and expects to be ready for the season opener. New England head coach Bill Belichick is expected to give the starters some time in this game. Take the Patriots to win at home. Final Score Prediction, New England Patriots 24-16.
