Carolina Panthers at Atlanta Falcons 10/30/22 - NFL Picks & Predictions

The Atlanta Falcons host the new-look Carolina Panthers in a Week 8 NFC South battle. These two teams will meet again in Week 10. Carolina won at Atlanta, 19-13, last season but lost to the Falcons at home, 29-21.

The Panthers are 2-5 overall and 0-2 on the road. They have covered the spread just twice this season and are 0-2 ATS as the visitor. The Falcons are 3-4 overall and 2-1 at home. They have covered the spread six times, including in all three home games.

The Panthers are fresh off a 21-3 shellacking of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Carolina was a nearly two-touchdown underdog coming in after trading star running back Christian McCaffrey to San Francisco earlier in the week. P.J. Walker threw two touchdown passes, but the stars of the game were the running backs. D'Onta Foreman had 15 carries for 118 yards, while Chuba Hubbard ran nine times for 63 yards and a touchdown. Hubbard did leave with what was deemed a minor ankle sprain in the fourth quarter and his status for Week 8 is unknown at this time.

The Falcons, now tied with the Buccaneers atop the NFC South standings, lost at Cincinnati, 35-17, in Week 7. Atlanta’s defense gave up 537 total yards, 459 of which was through the air. Marcus Mariota only threw the ball 13 times, completing eight for 124 yards and a touchdown. The Falcons didn’t do much better running the ball. Tyler Allgeier was the leading rusher with 16 carries for 50 yards and a touchdown. Mariota ran six times for 31 yards, and Caleb Huntley had six rushes for 22 yards. Damiere Byrd had just one catch on the day, but it was a 75-yard scoring play.

Carolina has the edge defensively, but both teams have shown an ability to control the opponent’s running attack. The Panthers have allowed 4.1 yards per carry, seventh fewest this season, while the Falcons rank 12th at 4.3 ypc. Carolina has the far superior pass defense, allowing just 6.4 yards per attempt, the 10th lowest. Atlanta has allowed the third-most yards per attempt with 7.6. As much as tanking might be in the Panthers best interest, we think they’ll score a second consecutive upset. Final Score Prediction: Carolina Panthers win 20-19.
