Bears at Lions 9/13/20 - NFL Picks, Betting Odds, & ATS Predictions

Last Updated: 09/03/2020 at 12:22 AM ET

On Sunday September 13th, the Chicago Bears will visit Ford Field in Detroit, Michigan to play the Detroit Lions in the opening game of the NFL regular season for both. The Chicago Bears were 8-8 in 2019 finishing third in the NFC North. Mitchell Trubisky will return as the Bears starting quarterback after throwing for 3,138 yards, 17 touchdowns and 10 interceptions last season but will be pushed by Nick Foles. Second-year running back David Montgomery looks to improve upon his rookie season of 889 yards rushing and six touchdowns, while Allen Robinson II returns as the top receiver after a season in which he had 1,147 yards and 7 touchdowns.

The top free agent signing for the Chicago Bears during the offseason was defensive end Robert Quinn who left the Dallas Cowboys. In addition, the Bears signed Artie Burns, Jimmy Graham, Barkevious Mingo, and Germain Ifedi. Chicago lost Nick Kwiatkoski, Ha Ha Clinton-Dix, Nick Williams, and Chase Daniel to free agency. The Bears did not pick until the second round of the NFL draft but had two choices in that round and selected tight end Cole Kmet out of Notre Dame and cornerback Jaylon Johnson out of Utah.

The Detroit Lions wear a disappointing 3-12-1 during the 2019 regular season due in a big part to the loss of starting quarterback Matthew Stafford. However, Stafford returns healthy to start the 2020 season and the offense has the potential of being very good. Free agent quarterback Chase Daniel will backup Stafford giving the Lions added depth at that position. Kerryon Johnson returns at running back but has missed 14 games in two NFL seasons and the Lions therefore drafted D’Andre Swift as an insurance policy. At wide receiver, the Lions are deep with Kenny Golladay, Marvin Jones, Danny Amendola, Geronimo Allison, and Quintez Cephus.

Detroit Lions traded away top defensive back Darius Slay, but signed free agents Desmond Trufant, Jayron Kearse, Danny Shelton, Chase Daniel, Nick Williams, Jamie Collins, Halapoulivaati Vaitai, Tony McRae, and Reggie Ragland.  The biggest contributors of the free-agent signings will be on the defensive side of the ball for the Detroit Lions. In the recently completed NFL draft, the Lions selected cornerback Jeff Okudah and running back D'Andre Swift with their two top picks.

While most expect Mitchell Trubisky to start at quarterback for the Chicago Bears there is a big possibility that free agent signing Nick Foles could be under center for Chicago Regardless the offense will be the weak link for Chicago while its defense led by Khalil Mack will once again be the most important part of the Bears team. Detroit added several free agents to its defense and increased the versatility in depth of its offense through free agent signings and draft picks and will defeat the Bears in the first game of the season at home at Ford Field. Final Score Prediction, Detroit Lions win and cover ATS 26-21
