The 2020 NFL draft will be held between Thursday April 23rd and Saturday April 25th. An unsung hero on the football field for every NFL team is the tight end. The tight end is expected to be a blocker as well as pass receiver and is an important part of each offense in the league. Five tight ends stand out and the 2020 NFL draft, with each of the five likely to see plenty of playing time in their rookie season.

Cole Kmet is considered the top tight end in the NFL draft. The 6-foot-6 and 262-pound Kmet played his college ball with the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Kmet ran a 4.70 40-yard dash in the NFL combine and is expected to be drafted during the second or third round. During the just completed 2019 season, Kmet caught 43 passes for 515 yards and six touchdowns.

Dayton Flyers’ tight-end Adam Trautman is considered the second best tight end available for the 2020 draft. The 6-foot-5 and 251-pounds tight end ran a 4.80 40-yard dash at the NFL combine. In 2019, Trautman caught 70 passes for 916 yards and 14 touchdowns and played in the Senior Bowl. Trautman is expected to be drafted in the middle rounds.

Third on the depth chart for tight ends in the 2020 NFL draft is Thaddeus Moss. The former LSU Tigers star is 6-foot-2 and 250 pounds. Moss did not take part in the NFL combine but has run a 4.65 40-yard dash. In 2019, Moss caught 47 passes for 570 yards and four touchdowns. If Moss has a weakness, it's with his blocking that must improve in the NFL.

Colby Parkinson is a 6-foot-7 and 252-pound tight end out of Stanford who is expected to be drafted in the top 5. Parkinson's 40-yard dash was just 4.83, which is much slower than was expected, at the NFL combine. In 2019, Parkinson caught 48 passes for 589 yards and one touchdown. Stanford is known for producing talented tight ends.

Missouri Tigers’ tight-end Albert Okwuegbunam is expected to be one of the top five tight ends drafted in April. Okwuegbunam ran an impressive 4.49 40-yard dash. In 2019, the Missouri tight end caught 26 passes for 306 yards and six touchdowns. Although very talented and likely to be a mismatch weapon against opposing defenses in the passing game, Okwuegbunam lacks maturity and because of that may not be drafted into the lower rounds.

Cole Kmet was expected to return to Notre Dame for the 2020 college football season but changed his mind and has become the odds-on favorite to be the first tight end drafted in late April. Kmet caught 43 passes for 515 yards and 6 TDs last season. The Fighting Irish tight end weighed more than any other tight end taking part in the NFL combine, yet ran the fourth best 40-yard dash at 4.70 and was first in the vertical jump and second in the broad jump.
