The Phoenix Mercury (2-1) look to bounce back from a loss when they visit the Los Angeles Sparks (2-1) also losers of their last outing, in a Sunday afternoon tilt.
On Wednesday, the Mercury were beaten by the Seattle Storm 87-71. Diana Taurasi led the Mercury in the loss with 23 points including four baskets from 3-point territory, while Brittney Griner scored 18.
The Sparks were defeated on Thursday by the Connecticut Sun 102-94 in a game that featured the Ogwumike sisters playing against one another. In the loss, Chelsea Gray led the Sparks with 21 points, while Odyssey Sims was close behind with 20 points. Candace Parker has missed each of the first three games for LA and is questionable for Sunday’s contest.
Diana Taurasi leads the Mercury in scoring with an average of 20.3 points per game, but just three tenths of a point behind is Brittney Griner averaging 20.0 per game. The leading rebounder is DeWanna Bonner averaging 8.0 boards per game, while Griner is averaging 7.0 per game. The team has two players tied for the lead in assists as Bonner and Briann January each are averaging 4.3 assists per game.
Nneka Ogwumike leads the Sparks in scoring and rebounding averaging 21.0 points and 7.7 rebounds per game. Odyssey Sims is close behind with an average of 19.3 points per game. The third leading scorer and leader in assists is Chelsea Gray with averages of 17.0 points and 7.0 assists per game. Ogwumike is shooting 63.4% from the field making 26 of her 41 field goals including 3-for-5 from 3-point territory.
