Last Updated: 09/11/2019 at 10:19 PM ET

In the first game of a Thursday doubleheader, the New York Yankees and Detroit Tigers will square off from Comerica Park. On Tuesday, six New York home runs were not enough during a 12-11 road loss against Detroit. Brett Gardner and Didi Gregorius each went deep twice for the Yankees, who are 44 games above .500 overall.

Thirty-six year old southpaw J.A. Happ (12-8 5.10 ERA) will take the mound for the Yankees in this matchup. New York has won each of Happ’s last three starts and he has allowed just three runs over his last 17 plus frames.

The Detroit Tigers have been dismal for much of this season and have not given their fans much to cheer about. In the series opener, Detroit SS Jordy Mercer sent the fans home happy by delivering a walk-off single that scored Willi Castro. Jeimer Candelario collected three hits and drove in three runs for the Tigers, who won for just the 19th time at home.

The Tigers will counter with talented left-hander Matthew Boyd (8-10 4.57 ERA) on Thursday. Boyd has won consecutive starts despite giving up 16 hits and ten runs over his last 12 plus innings of work.

New York OF Giancarlo Stanton (knee) could be activated at some point during next week’s homestand. Through 147 games, New York ranks 3rd in OPS and 1st in runs scored. For the season, Detroit ranks 29th in OPS and 30th in runs scored. Take the Yankees to win the opening game of the doubleheader. Final Score Prediction, New York Yankees win 6-4.
