The New York Yankees conclude their three-game Subway Series on Sunday at Citi Field against the New York Mets.
The Yankees won the first game of the series to move into first place in the American League East by a half game over the Boston Red Sox. The Mets have now lost seven straight. In Friday’s win Brett Gardner hit a two run tie-breaking homer in the eighth off Jason deGrom to lead the Yankees to a 4-1 victory, while Giancarlo Stanton added a solo shot in the ninth. Yankees starter Masahiro Tanaka left the game early with a hamstring problem while running the bases. It is not known if this will keep Tanaka from his next start. Before he left, Tanaka had eight strikeouts and one walk.
Miguel Andujar leads New York with a .301 batting average. Aaron Judge leads the Yankees in hits with 60, home runs with 17 and RBIs with 44. New York has a team batting average of .254, while opposing hitters are averaging .218 at the plate against Yankees pitching. On Sunday, the Yankees will send Luis Severino to the mound. The right-hander this season is 9-1 with an ERA of 2.20, 102 Ks and 21 BBs.
Asdrubal Cabrera leads the Mets with a .286 batting average and team highs in hits with 66, home runs with 10 and RBIs with 34. New York has a team batting average of .232 while opposing hitters are averaging .253 at the plate against Mets pitching. On Sunday, the Mets will send Seth Lugo to the mound.
