San Francisco Giants at Minnesota Twins 8/27/22 - MLB Picks & Predictions

The Minnesota Twins host the San Francisco Giants on Saturday, Aug. 27, in the second game of a three-game interleague series.

Minnesota entered the series opener one game over .500 at 62-61, but the Twins were just four games behind American League East leader Cleveland. San Francisco was 61-62, third in the National League West 25 games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers and 5.5 games out of the final Wild Card spot.

Sonny Gray (7-4, 3.10 ERA) will be on the mound for Minnesota, while Alex Cobb gets the start for San Francisco (4-6, 3.99 ERA). Gray is just 1-1 over his last four starts but has allowed just five earned runs. Cobb is also 1-1 over that stretch but has allowed 10 runs in 24 innings.

Veteran Evan Longoria has been hitting well for the Giants in August. His season batting average is up to .259 after hitting .324 over his last 37 at bats. His OPS for that stretch is 1.030. Joc Pederson (18 HRs, .829 OPS) has been the most consistent San Francisco regular for 2022.

Minnesota’s offense is led by Byron Buxton (28 HRs, .833 OPS) and Luis Arraez (.322 AVG, .388 OBP). Both have seen their output dip in August, however. Buxton has just two homers and has hit .245, while Arraez’s on-base percentage has dropped to .322.

Neither team has hit particularly well since the All-Star break, and both rank in the bottom third of the league in runs scored over that time. Gray has been really good for the Twins of late and gives them the edge on the mound to start. Add in that Minnesota’s hitters are a combined 21 for 65 against Cobb all-time, and we like the Twins to win this one. Final Score Prediction, Minnesota Twins win 4-2.
