Rangers at Giants 8/1/20 - MLB Picks & Predictions

The Texas Rangers travel on the road to Oracle Park to take on the San Francisco Giants as COVID-19 spreads throughout the MLB putting the season in serious danger of being canceled. The Rangers come in 2-3 on the season, snapping a three-game losing streak with a home 7-4 win over the Diamondbacks. The Giants lost a heartbreaker in extra innings to the Padres 12-7 after giving up six runs in the top of the 10th game. The Giants fell to 3-4 on the season.

The Rangers will send out Jordan Lyles who will be making the first start of his the season. Lyles has made an appearance from the bullpen pitching two innings, striking out two batters and not surrendering a hit. Lyles has had a long career in the MLB as he enters his 9th season his career ERA sits at 5.09 with a 2.2 career strikeout to walk ratio. 

The Giants have not announced a starter yet but the reports from Giants beat writers is that Drew Smyly will get the nod. Smyly as made one start and two appearances pitching 4.1 innings allowing one earned run, striking out four and walking two. Smyly has bounced around the MLB in recent years and has a career ERA of 4.14.

The Rangers come in as nearly the worst offense in the MLB to this point in the season batting at a team batting average of .181, the second-worst in the MLB. The Rangers have averaged just 2.6 runs per game and are striking out 8 times per game, drawing just three walks per nine innings. The Giants are hitting .247 on the season ranking 7th in the MLB in team batting average but have struggled to score runs averaging 3.86 runs per game.

The Rangers have struggled at the plate this season, batting just .181 on the year and scoring 2.6 runs per game which ranks dead last in the MLB on the season. The Giants have been hitting the ball well but have just struggled with timely hitting, ranking in the top 10 in team batting average but in the bottom 10 in runs scored. With both teams struggling to score runs to this point in the season and two veteran pitchers, the total stays UNDER. Final score prediction, Giants win 3-2.
