Pittsburgh Pirates at San Francisco Giants 8/12/22 - MLB Picks & Predictions

The Pittsburgh Pirates will continue their west coast road trip with a trip to Oracle Park to take on the San Francisco Giants. The Pirates are well out of the playoff picture, as expected, and after splitting a four-game set with the Arizona Diamondbacks sit at 45-66 on the year. San Francisco has had a brutal start to the second half of the season and have fallen below .500 at 54-57, leaving them 7.5 games back of the last NL wild card spot. Find out who else is in the running with our MLB picks.

San Francisco has been a solid offensive unit this season averaging 4.56 runs per game but lacks the star power of the top echelon of teams in the National League. Joc Pederson started the year hot but has fallen off since, he leads the team with 17 home runs and 45 RBIs, but has yet to hit a homer and has driven in just two runs in August. It’s a balanced effort but just one more big bat in this lineup would have gone a long way as the postseason approaches.

The left-handed Carlos Rodon will get the start in hopes of continuing to roll through lineups as he has the last two seasons. Rodon is 10-6 with a 2.95 ERA and 1.07 WHIP on the year. He’s coming off another solid outing allowing a run on five hits and striking out three in 5.1 innings of work. Rodon is coming off the best season of his career, and although the numbers are up a little bit from last year, he’s clearly turned a corner as he approaches thirty.

Pittsburgh is one of the worst offenses in the MLB, they’re averaging just 3.62 runs per game ranking 28th in the league in scoring offense. It seems the Pirates are constantly rebuilding, but some budding stars in Pittsburgh, including Bryan Reynolds, who leads the team hitting .256 and 16 home runs. Third baseman Ke’Bryan Hayes is hitting .248 with 35 RBIs, but at just 25 years old and with a team-high 3.2 WAR there is plenty to be excited about there.

Bryse Wilson will get the start for the Pirates and hope to build off a solid start in his last outing. He allowed a run on four hits and struck out five in 5 innings of work in an 8-1 win over the Orioles. Wilson is just 24 years old but made his MLB debut in 2018, and has bounced back and forth between the minor leagues since. Wilson has a career 5.67 ERA and 1.55 WHIP across 182.2 innings, functioning as a starter for most of those.

The Giants are a huge favorite in this game, but I’m eyeing the total in a this matchup. Both offenses have been swinging the bat well and this pitching matchup could be one that generates plenty of runs for both of these offenses. With the total at just seven, the Giants could realistically get their all by themselves but even so, we can rely on the Pirates to scrape across a couple of runs against a team that is 18th in the MLB in ERA. Final score prediction, Giants win and the total goes OVER 6-4.
