Phillies at Mets 7/7/19 - MLB Picks & Predictions

Citi Field will play host to a Sunday afternoon clash between the Philadelphia Phillies and New York Mets. Philadelphia took Friday’s series opener by five runs, but was unable to keep the momentum going during last night’s 6-5 loss. Jay Bruce homered against his former team in a losing effort for the Phillies, who are 6.5 games out of first place in the NL East.

Twenty-six year old righty Aaron Nola (7-2 3.89 ERA) continues to provide quality start after quality start for the Phillies. Over his last 23 innings, Nola has allowed just one earned run and struck out 28 batters. The New York Mets have been one of the most disappointing teams in baseball, but showed plenty of fight during Saturday’s testy victory. New York C Tomas Nido’s three-run double in the fifth inning put his team ahead for good. All-Star Jeff McNeil had a four-hit night and scored a run for the Mets, who are nine games below .500 overall.

The Mets will counter with hard-throwing righty Zack Wheeler (6-5 4.42 ERA) on Sunday. Through 114 innings this season, Wheeler has fanned 125 batters and owns a solid 1.25 WHIP.

New York OF Brandon Nimmo (neck) has been shut down from baseball activities for the next month. Through 89 games, Philadelphia ranks 19th in OPS and 15th in runs scored. For the season, New York ranks 16th in OPS and 18th in runs scored. Look for Nola and the Phillies to win the rubber game of this weekend series. Final Score Prediction, Philadelphia Phillies win 5-3.
