Philadelphia Phillies at New York Mets 5/29/22 - MLB Picks & Predictions

The Philadelphia Phillies travel on the road to close out a series with the New York Mets. The Mets have been one of the best teams in baseball and after winning the opening two games of this series, are 30-17 holding an eight-game lead over the Braves in the NL East. The Phillies have had some struggles this season, but it’s early and at 21-25 they trail the Mets by 8.5 games.

New York’s offense has been one of the best in baseball hitting .261 as a unit, which is tied for the best in the MLB, and are third in scoring offense averaging 4.83 runs per contest. Pete Alonso continues to produce with a team-high 12 home runs, and an MLB high 45 RBIs, including four in the series opener against the Phillies.

Chris Bassitt will get the start for the Mets, he’s been a solid piece this season going 4-2 with a 3.91 ERA in his nine starts. His last outing was a rough one, allowing eight runs on eight hits including three home runs as the Mets fell 13-12 to the Giants. Basitt is coming off the best two seasons of his career, and although he hasn’t been as dominant, still looks to be a solid arm in the Mets rotation.

The Phillies' offense is loaded with superstars and has produced this season with a .724 OPS which is 8th in the MLB, they’re also ninth in scoring offense. Bryce Harper has continued to lead this team – leading the team in batting average (.313), home runs (10), and RBIs (32). Kyle Schwarber is also having a nice season despite hitting .190, he has 10 home runs and 22 RBIs.

Zack Wheeler will get the ball for the Phillies in hopes of continuing his strong run of seasons for the Phillies. Wheeler is 3-3 in his 8 starts, but has posted a 3.38 ERA and 1.15 WHIP, and is on pace for a career-high 5.1K/BB ratio. Wheeler allowed two runs across 6.2 innings in his last outing, doing so without issuing a walk and striking out 10 on the way to a 7-3 Phillies win over the Braves.

Philadelphia is a small underdog in this game, but after the Mets dominated them yesterday on the way to a 8-2 win, I’ll take the favorite at home. New York has been one of the best teams in baseball this season, and although Bassitt is coming off a poor outing in he’s able to bounce back and give the Mets bats enough time to take over the game as they’ve done all season. Final score prediction, New York Mets win 6-5.
