The final game of the Sunday MLB schedule will feature a matchup between the New York Yankees and the Oakland Athletics. The Yankees (76-53) are nine games above .500 on the road and trail Tampa Bay by 4.5 games for the AL East Division lead. On Saturday, Aaron Judge’s two-run blast in the ninth inning was not enough during a 3-2 loss against Oakland.
Twenty-eight year old southpaw Jordan Montgomery (5-5 3.69 ERA) has been solid for the Yankees this season. New York has won Montgomery’s last four starts and he has allowed five runs over his last 19 plus innings.
The Oakland Athletics snapped New York’s 13-game winning streak yesterday and trail Boston by 3.5 in the race for the final AL Wild Card spot. SP Frankie Montas (10-9) fanned six batters across seven shutout frames to earn the victory. Matt Chapman’s fourth inning solo shot put the Athletics (71-59) by a 3-0 score.
The Athletics will give the nod to twenty-seven year old righty Paul Blackburn (0-1 4.09 ERA) in the series finale. Through 11 innings of work, Blackburn has given up one home run and struck out eight batters.
