New York Yankees at Boston Red Sox 7/7/22 - MLB Picks & Predictions

The biggest rivals in the MLB will meet up again at Fenway Park when the Boston Red Sox host the New York Yankees. New York has lost back to back games, but holds the best record in baseball through the first half of the season and not by a particularly small margin at 58-23. New York has extended their lead to 13 games. The Red Sox are second in the division at 45-36, and have had a solid season but struggled to keep pace with the Yankees.

The Yankees offense has been one of the best in baseball averaging 5 runs per game which is second in the MLB. Aaron Judge has been hands down the best player in baseball this season, likely earning himself a record breaking contract in the process. Judge leads the league with 29 home runs, is fifth in RBIs with 60, and is batting near a career-high hitting .281.

Gerrit Cole will get the start for the Yankees and after a lot being made of a tough end to last year, he’s looked in form this season. Cole is 7-2 with a 2.99 ERA and has especially settled down as the year has progressed. Cole is fourth in the MLB with 117 strikeouts and coming off a solid outing allowing only two solo home runs in six innings of work.

Boston has come on strong after at one point early in the season being last in the division. The offense has got on a bit of a run and is averaging 4.72 runs per game which is sixth in the MLB in scoring offense. Rafael Devers has had an incredible year and leads the team with 17 home runs and is 3rd in the MLB in batting average hitting .327. 

The right-handed Josh Winckowski will get the ball for the Red Sox in what will be only the fifth start of his career. Winckowski is 3-2 with a 3.12 ERA on the year, and is coming off a solid start in his last outing going six innings allowing a run on six hits in a loss to the Cubs. Winckowski is just 24-years-old and hasn’t seen an offense like the Yankees in any of his first five starts in the big leagues.
