New York Mets at Atlanta Braves 10/1/22 - MLB Picks & Predictions

The Atlanta Braves host the New York Mets for the second game of a three-game series Oct. 1 with the NL Central title still up for grabs. Coming into Friday’s game, the Braves led the season series 9-7 but trailed the Mets by one game in the standings.

The Mets are 98-58 overall and 47-31 on the road. That road record is the third best in MLB this season, behind only the Dodgers and Astros, and two games better than the Braves. Against the runline, New York is 84-72 overall and 46-32 on the road.

Atlanta is 97-59 and 52-26 at home. That is the fourth best home record in the league, trailing the Dodgers, Yankees and Astros, and besting the Mets by a game. The Braves are 80-73 overall and 37-41 at home against the runline.

Max Scherzer is scheduled to make his 23rd start of the season for the Mets. He is 11-4 with a 2.13 ERA in 139 2/3 innings. Scherzer has struck out 169, walked 24 and allowed 99 hits. He is 3-0 against the Braves this season with a 2.21 ERA over 20 1/3 innings. Braves hitters have struck out 28 times against him and have an on-base average of just .145.

Kyle Wright is set to make his 30th start of the season for Atlanta. He is the MLB leader with 20 wins and has just five losses to go along with a 3.18 ERA over 175 1/3 innings. Wright has struck out 171, walked 52 and allowed 149 hits. He has faced the Mets twice this season, going 0-2 with a 6.23 ERA. He was tagged for 16 hits, including five home runs, in 13 IP. Both of those games were in New York, however, and Wright is 12-2 with a 2.83 ERA in 16 starts at home.

Braves hitters are just 45-for-214 lifetime against Scherzer, while several Mets have had success against Wright. Jeff McNeil is 7-for-15 against him with two doubles, and Pete Alonso is 4-for-11 with two homers. Alonso has not hit particularly well in Atlanta though, with an OPS of .737 in 29 games compared to his career OPS of .883. McNeil has done much better at Trust Park than Alonso with a .945 OPS, well above his career OPS of .822. Wright has labored a bit down the stretch despite continuing to win games, while Scherzer has been fantastic this month. We think Mad Max finishes the regular season on a high note. Final Score Prediction: New York Mets win 4-2.
