The Marlins have dealt with more adversity this season than anybody in the MLB after double-digit players tested positive for the coronavirus putting the season on hold for over a week. Despite that, the Marlins have opened the season 5-1 and have won their last four games. The Mets have been up and down this year, winning their last time out over the Washington Nationals 3-1 to improve to 5-8 on the year.

The Marlins are batting just .217 as a team and have scored 4 runs per game on the year, granted their last two wins over the Orioles were 7 inning doubleheaders that the MLB has introduced in an attempt to get through the season.

Starting this game for the Marlins will be Sandy Alcantara who is 1-0 on the year after pitching 7 innings, allowing three hits and striking out 7 in his season opener against the Phillies. Alcantara has been in the league for three years, but broke out last year in 32 starts posting a 3.88 ERA for the Marlins last season.

The Mets offense has not been an issue this season coming in batting .261 and 3.9 runs per game on the season. All-star first baseman Pete Alonso has gotten off to a sluggish start batting just .180 and striking out 20 times in 50 at-bats on the year.

Taking the hill for the Mets is right-hander Michael Wacha who has appeared twice this season, posting a 6 ERA in 9 innings, striking out 9 and walking 3. Wacha has spent the majority of his career as a St. Louis Cardinal and is 60-40 lifetime with a 3.93 ERA. The Mets pitching staff, specifically the bullpen has struggled this season posting a team ERA of 4.89.

The Marlins have been a major surprise in this young MLB season, whether it be due to COVID-19 or starting off the season 5-1 despite the lowest of expectations. Their impressive record doesn’t tell the whole story due to the level of competition they have played. Now missing multiple starters and being forced to call up youth and experience to fill the lineup, it seems unlikely that the Marlins can continue this level of success. The Mets behind Michael Wacha and a solid offense get the best of the Marlins at home. Final score prediction, Mets win 7-3.
