The New York Mets head to the desert southwest to face the Arizona Diamondbacks on Thursday in the first game of a four-game series.
The Mets are free falling having lost nine of their last 10 including Wednesday night’s 8-2 setback against the Atlanta Braves. Zack Wheeler lasted to just the fourth inning and saw his record fall to 2-5. Wheeler gave up eight hits and six runs, while walking four and striking out two.
Newly acquired Jon Jay connected for a home run and added two other hits as Arizona won a slugfest 13-8 on Tuesday over the Pittsburgh Pirates in a game marred by errors. The win was Arizona’s fifth straight to keep them three games in front of the Los Angeles Dodgers at the top of the National League West.
Asdrubal Cabrera leads the Mets with a .278 batting average and team highs in hits with 67, home runs with 11 and RBIs with 36. New York has a team batting average of .228 while opposing hitters are averaging .252 at the plate against Mets pitching. On Thursday, the Mets will send Steven Matz to the mound.
