Los Angeles Angels at San Diego Padres 3/7/23 - MLB Spring Training Picks & Predictions

The San Diego Padres host the Los Angeles Angels for a Spring Training at 3:10 p.m. EST on Tuesday at the Peoria Sports Complex in Peoria, Arizona. Tucker Davidson is expected to start for the Angels, while the Padres had not named a starter Monday evening.

San Diego lost to the Los Angeles Dodgers, 8-3, on Monday. The Dodgers batted around in the second inning while scoring six runs. Padres starting pitcher Nick Martinez allowed three runs (one earned), three hits and a walk while striking out three batters in 1.1 innings. Edwuin Bencomo relieved Martinez and gave up three runs on four hits in 2/3 of an inning.

The Angels beat Cleveland, 6-0, on Monday. Griffin Canning pitched two scoreless innings while giving up two hits and striking out two batters. Seven Los Angeles pitchers tossed an inning each in relief and allowed just three more hits and two walks while striking out eight. Hunter Renfroe homered in the second to get the Angels first run. Los Angeles plated four more in the fifth and another in the seventh. Trey Cabbage went 2-for-2 with two runs batted in after entering as a pinch hitter.

The Angels came in third in the American League West, 33 games behind Houston with a record of 73-89. Los Angeles missed the playoffs by 13 games. San Diego made the playoffs with an 89-73 record last season and finished second in the National League West, 22 games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Padres advanced to the NL Championship Series before losing 4-1 to Philadelphia.

San Diego is 6-5 so far this spring. The Padres have scored 66 runs and given up 48. The Angels are 6-4 with 58 runs cored and 41 allowed. Davidson started eight games for the Angels after coming to Los Angeles via a trade with Atlanta. He was roughed up pretty good with a 6.87 ERA and 1.66 WHIP over 36.2 innings pitched. He struck out 23 and walked 22. The Padres should have little trouble hitting Davidson provided at least some of the regulars play. Final Score Prediction: San Diego Padres win 7-5.
