Comerica Park will play host to a Sunday afternoon MLB showdown between the Cleveland Indians and Detroit Tigers. Last night, Cleveland had their three-game winning streak snapped during a 4-2 defeat in 12 innings. Yan Gomes and Rajai Davis each went deep for the Indians, who lead the Tigers by five games for the AL Central Division lead.
Thirty-two year old righty Corey Kluber (9-2 1.96 ERA) is off to a Cy Young Award caliber season for the Indians. Kluber, who won the award in 2014, has allowed just three runs total over his last five starts.
The Detroit Tigers are a team in rebuilding mode and selected Auburn SP Casey Mize with the number one overall pick in this week’s MLB Draft. Last night, Jeimer Candelario smashed a two-run walkoff home run to give the Tigers the victory. SP Mike Fiers struck out eight batters and allowed just one run over seven frames on the evening.
Twenty-six year old righty Artie Lewicki (0-1 3.86 ERA) will make the third start of his major league career. Through 29 career innings, Lewicki has struck out 20 batters and owns a subpar 1.86 WHIP.
